Preparing Your Home For Winter

Maintain your filters...Replace or clean your furnace filter. This will keep the air in your house cleaner, make your furnace more efficient, and help lower your heating bills.

Set the thermostat low...If your home has a programmable thermostat, set it for reasonable times and temperatures, i.e. reduce the heat slightly for night time hours, about 4 to 5 degrees cooler than your daytime temperature. If you don't own a programmable thermostat, consider having one installed; they do help reduce heating costs.

Restrict use of exhaust fans...In the heating season, water vapors from bathing and cooking are beneficial because they help humidify the home. Use kitchen and bath exhaust fans sparingly in the winter to keep as much heat as possible inside your home. In just two to three hours of use,
kitchen and bath exhaust fans can blow away a house full of heat.

Drain outside faucets...Turn off the water to all outside faucets and
drain water from the pipes leading to the spigot. Drain and remove
all hoses.

Caulk and maintain weather stripping... Ensure that your doors
and windows are air tight; this will help reduce your heating bills.
Maintain weather stripping around doors and use caulk on openings
or outlets around pipes, foundation, windows, etc.

Let the sunshine in...The sun's energy can have a noticeable effect
on the temperature in your home, especially from windows facing
south and west. Keep window shades and drapes open during winter
months to let in the sun's radiant heat. Doing so could save you up to
3-4% on heating costs.

Preparing Your Vehicle For Winter

Install good winter tires...Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weather radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions.

Maintain at least a half tank of gas during the winter season.

Place a winter emergency kit in each vehicle. Some ideas for that kit include:

A shovel

Windshield scraper and small broom

Flashlight

First aid kit

B
lanket(s)

Booster cables

Emergency flares

Fluorescent distress flag

Battery powered radio

Extra batteries

Water

Snack food

Matches
